Effects of gasket materials on the crevice corrosion resistance of stainless steel flanges have been investigated in natural seawater and related chloride containing waters. Results for tests comprising cast CF3M (UNS J92800) wrought Type 316 (UNS S3 1600) flanges having grooved and smooth finishes are discussed. Overall, natural and synthetic elastomer-type gaskets were less likely to promote crevice corrosion than PTFE gaskets and others containing fibers. While carbon and graphite containing gaskets promoted crevice corrosion, some others promoted even greater attack.
