A novel laboratory-scale test was developed to simulate the individual corrosive effects of the heavy metal chlorides ZnCl{sub 2} and PbCl{sub 2} during high-temperature corrosion that occurs during the burning of certain fossil fuels and municipal waste. The test is a modification of the Dean test, which is often used in the study of hot-salt corrosion. Using ZnCl{sub 2} as the corrosive compound, a sample temperature of 950--1000 F (51O--54O C), and a N{sub 2}-14vol% CO{sub 2}-3.6 O{sub 2}-0.25 SO{sub 2} inlet gas atmosphere, corrosion rates similar to those obtained from a field study have been produced. Moreover, the measured corrosion rates were found to be inversely related to the (Ni + Mo + Cr) content in the alloys, and of the eleven different alloys studied, two C-type alloys and the 625 alloy performed the best.
