Sample methodology to reduce background contamination of polychlorodibenzo-dioxin/furans during stationary source sampling

Background contamination from a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources often interferes with the accurate determination of low level polychlorodibenzo-dioxin/furan (D/F) emissions. This paper discusses the sampling methodologies adopted to determine very low levels of D/F emissions from two hazardous waste incinerator stacks operated at PPG Industries, Inc.`s Lake Charles, Louisiana complex. The stacks were evaluated under typical operating conditions for D/F using an enhanced version of USEPA Method 23. This protocol reduces the interference of background levels of D/F to the point where very low levels of emissions can be accurately demonstrated. The heightened level of precision attributable to the clean protocol should allow evaluation of any effects of minor operational changes.
