The morphology and growth kinetics of protective {alpha}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} scales formed during high-temperature oxidation of the Fe-Cr-Al and Fe-Cr-Al-Y alloys were studied. Scanning electron microscopy observations were focused on the oxide-wrinkling phenomenon and formation of interfacial cavities in the course of oxidation of the yttrium-free alloy. In this paper, emphasis is also placed on the effects of surface preparation and yttrium additions on the scale and scale-alloy interface structures. Several features of alumina morphology, which have not received sufficient attention previously, are discussed in the context of existing models; some critical issues are outlined.
