Receptor model evaluation of ozone precursor emissions during 1994 for Chicago
- Univ. of Illinois, Chicago, IL (United States). School of Public Health
Under the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, a network of Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations (PAMS) has been established in the Lake Michigan ozone nonattainment area. The PAMS network is designed to aid in the tracking of NMOC and NO{sub x} emission changes and to provide sufficient data to evaluate the effectiveness of VOC and NO{sub x} emission control programs. During the summer of 1994, two stations were operated in Illinois including a site to monitor precursor emissions near the center of Chicago (NWU), and a site to monitor downwind maximum concentration far north of the city at the Illinois-Wisconsin border (Zion). Both sites are located along the lake shore. Three hour average speciated NMHC concentrations were determined four times per day (start times were hour 0, 6, 12 and 15) at each site on an once every three day schedule (extra sampling days were added on days with high ozone forecasts). The purpose of this study is to extract and evaluate emission inventory information contained in the 1994 Illinois PAMS data using the Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) receptor model. Sample-specific emissions for vehicles, gasoline vapors, whole gasoline, petroleum refineries, graphic arts, architectural coatings and coke ovens were determined for each sample using the CMB model. Vehicles were the largest source modeled accounting for an average of 138{micro}g/m{sup 3} (68.4% of NMOC) at NWU and 32{micro}g/m{sup 3} (31.6% of NMOC) at Zion. Gasoline vapor concentrations at these sites have decreased significantly between 1991 and 1994 (18{micro}g/m{sup 3} in 1991 to 5.1{micro}g/m{sup 3} in 1994 at NWU, and 2.6{micro}g/m{sup 3} in 1991 to 1.5{micro}g/m{sup 3} in 1994 at Zion) demonstrating the effectiveness of lower RVP and stage-2 controls in reducing fugitive gasoline vapor emissions.
