Title: Gel retarder for fire prevention and extinguishing -- Its application for spontaneous combustion of coal seams

Abstract

With its unique function, gel retarder has been successfully applied to extinguish fire at coal face, roadways and stop line of upper slice extraction, and a comparably perfect set of fire extinguishing techniques has been developed. The technique gathers together characteristics of water-fixation, leak-blocking, cooling, oxidation-retarding and heat-resisting. A new agglomerating agent without amine and corrosion has been developed to replace amine-salt and acid used in the past. Gel-injection technology cooperating with the grouting system on the ground solves previous problems in which gel-injection velocity was slow and materials transport was difficult. The technique has become the main measure to extinguish spontaneous combustion in coal mines in China. The use of gel retarder as an important means of underground fire prevention will be applied more widely to prevent and extinguish spontaneous fire in coal mines.

  • Spoil banks of coal mining have become an important aspect for environmental pollution. Toxic and pernicious gases resulting from the spontaneous combustion of wastes are much more serious pollutants. The authors have gained certain experience in preventing the spontaneous combustion of spoil banks and in fighting fires. The paper describes a revegetation test for the spoil bank. Using a spoil bank in the frigid and arid area in Shanxi, the paper describes the tests and results of the physical and chemical characteristics of the wastes and thoroughly analyzes the influence these characteristics have on the revegetation of the spoil bank.more » Revegetation promotes weathering of the wastes and mitigates erosion of the spoil bank. It was found that the wastes do not store adequate water, so that in the early stage of planting, irrigation is recommended. The pH of the wastes is suitable for plant growth, but in the case of fire fighting, care should be taken to mitigate the damage to lime emulsion alkalinity.« less
  • This patent describes a formulation for use in extinguishing coal fires, without generation of substantial gases toxic to humans, for metering to the fire at about a 6-10 percent dilution rate to water. The formulation consists essentially of a mixture of: a linear alkylbenzolyate sulfonate, non-ionic detergent and lauric superamide detergent mixture comprising about 50 percent by volume of the formulation; vitamin B-6 in the amount of about 0.5-3 percent by weight of the detergent mixture; bicarbonate of soda in the amount of about 3-18 percent by weight of the detergent mixture; and water comprising about 37-47 percent by volumemore » of the total formulation.« less
  • Based on the mechanism of rubber aging and action of anti-aging agents in preventing rubber aging, the free radical chain reaction mechanism of the oxidation of coal was discussed and compound stopping agents were introduced in the paper. The rubber anti-aging agents of aromatic amine are selected for the stopping agent of preventing coal spontaneous combustion. The stopping action of these anti-aging agents and common inorganic salt stopping agents for long flame coal in Gengcun Colliery, Yima city, Henan province in China is researched. The anti-aging agents for the long flame coal have the prominent efficiency and fine stopping actionmore » in later period, and inorganic stopping agents containing magnesium chloride salt for the long flame coal have the prominent efficiency in early period, but the compound stopping agents that are composed of the rubber anti-aging agents and magnesium chloride have longer life.« less
  • Low cost fuels and low cost environmental cleanup systems are becoming a necessity for the electric utility industry as a result of the onset of more stringent environmental regulations, combined with deregulation of the electric utility industry. One source of potential low cost fuel is coal fines from coal preparation plant impoundments. One option to co-fire high ash, low cost coals is to use staged combustion technology.
  • Spontaneous combustion fires in deep metal mines, through relatively infrequent, are nonetheless cause for considerable concern because they pose a direct threat to the safety of miners and are quite disruptive to mine operations. They often occur in remote, inactive, or abandoned sectors of a mine where access for firefighting is difficult or impossible. Over half of all noncoal mine fires that last more than 24 hours are caused by spontaneous combustion. The most common means of fire control for spontaneous combustion fires is sealing and/or flooding the affected zone. This process is never easy, but it is made especiallymore » difficult (and hazardous) if the fire grows in size and intensity to the point where underground fire-fighting crews must wear self-contained breathing apparatus owing to mine air contamination. The Bureau of Mines has developed and in-mine tested a mineworthy fire detection system capable of sensing the earliest traces of spontaneous combustion, thus enabling mine personnel to initiate fire control operations before hazardous atmospheres are created. This paper discusses system design within the context of the harsh mine environment, and describes laboratory and in-mine performance tests of prototype equipment.« less
