Responding to the coal-related environmental issues challenging the People`s Republic of China

Conference ·
OSTI ID:349113

China faces the world`s largest coal-related environmental problems. The Chinese government is giving increased attention to coal-related environmental problems through legislation and specific restrictions on coal use in some areas. This paper reviews the seriousness of coal-related pollution at the household, industry, and power sector levels, and suggests a strategy to reduce the growth rate in coal-related pollution over the next two decades. The most vigorous action will be to reduce local pollution which has the most serious public health impacts. China will probably eventually participate in international agreements to reduce the rate of growth in greenhouse gas emissions. This might provide an important opportunity for the transfer of advanced coal technologies from the US to China.
