Asia leads the world in economic growth, dependence on coal, and coal-related environmental problems. The continued dominance of coal in Asia will increasingly depend on the ability of coal to meet the following two major challenges: stricter environmental legislation, and increased competition from other energy sources, particularly natural gas. This paper examines plausible impacts of environmental, natural gas, and energy policy factors on Asian coal demand. The paper suggests that Asia`s dominant coal consumer, China, is a good candidate for development of both major coalbed methane and coal gasification industries over the next two decades.
