A demand-side management information system (DSMIS) is a computerized information storage, retrieval and reporting system used to develop, implement, manage and evaluate DSM programs. At the simplest level, it functions as a tracking system for demand-side management programs. A more advanced DSMIS, however, can readily access and share data with other utility information systems, such as customer information and marketing information systems. The resulting integrated network serves as an information management tool for a range of utility business functions, including marketing, accounting, corporate planning, and engineering. How a utility uses its demand-side information resources--as a simple tracking system or as a multi-dimensional, cross-functional integrated DSM information system--can affect its ability to adapt to today`s rapidly changing industry climate of uncertain regulatory requirements and increasingly competitive conditions. This report provides utility decision makers with a comprehensive summary: the important multifunctional uses of integrated, utility-wide information systems such as an advanced DSMIS; the current status of DSMISs at a number of utilities throughout the US; the role of DSMISs in the evolving utility industry; the vendor perspective on the role of DSM information systems in the electric utility industry; and, the key functional issues utilities need to address when designing, developing, implementing and upgrading demand-side management information systems.
