Two novel, isostructural, one-dimensional tellurites of molybdenum(VI), (NH{sub 4}){sub 4}Mo{sub 6}TeO{sub 22}{center_dot}2H{sub 2}O and Rb{sub 4}Mo{sub 6}-TeO{sub 22}{center_dot}2H{sub 2}O, have been synthesized by hydrothermal method. They contain linear (Mo{sub 6}TeO{sub 22}){sup 4{minus}} anionic chains, parallel to one another and held together by NH{sub 4}{sup +}/Rb{sup +} ions. Mo{sub 6}O{sub 22} moieties, formed by edge-sharing of six MoO{sub 6} octahedra, are connected through tellurium resulting in the (Mo{sub 6}TeO{sub 22}){sup 4{minus}} anionic chain. Tellurium is four-coordinated with SF{sub 4} geometry. The water of crystallization occupies the rest of the lattice. Both compounds have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Hydrothermal syntheses, structure, powder X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and thermal studies of these compounds are described.
