The CKM matrix and CP violation

In the Standard Model, the effective couplings for the weak decays of quarks are described by the unitary Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. The CKM matrix is central to understanding CP violation within the framework of the Standard Model. The author reviews the measurements of CKM matrix elements and show how these results influence thinking about experiments to detect CP violation in the B meson system.
