There are many heat-recovery heat pump (HRHP) installations in the United States and Canada, but little documentation exists of operating experiences. ASHRAE-RP656 (CR 1993) has gathered, analyzed, and documented information on such systems that should be beneficial to both consulting engineers and engineers in industry. The information covers energy performance, economics of operation, operating difficulties, operator and management reactions, and details on the design of the various HRHPS. The information on the systems was obtained through direct telephone contact with plant personnel at each of the sites and supplemented with published literature and by discussions with utility, manufacturer, and design personnel who had been associated with the project.
