Effect of strength matching on fracture behavior of notched, high strength steel welded joint
- Kawasaki Steel Corp., Chiba (Japan). Iron and Steel Research Labs.
The effect of strength matching on fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation of welded joints was studied by the CTOD test, the through thickness notched and the surface notched wide plate tensile tests, and the fatigue crack propagation test using the overmatched, evenmatched and undermatched welded joints of a 50mm thick, 500MPa yield strength steel plate for offshore structures. The degree of yield strength matching influences the overall performance of welded joints only in ductile mode. The CTOD values obtained by the three point bend and the through thickness notched wide plate tensile tests were not affected by the degree of yield strength matching, but was determined by the toughness of the material at the crack tip. The fatigue crack propagation rate became larger with the strength of weld metal. The fatigue and ductile cracks propagated toward the lower strength material.
