The authors monitor the synthesis of ZrO{sub 2} colloids from dissolved ZrOCl{sub 2}{center_dot}8H{sub 2}O using quasi-elastic light scattering and cryotransmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). They investigate the effects of both precursor salt concentration and pH on the final size distribution. They find that the initial pH plays the most important role in the final particle size and yield. These trends and cryo-TEM observations help elucidate the roles of nucleation, aggregation, and recrystallization.
