The primary means of corrosion control for buried pipelines is the use of an external pipeline coating and the application of cathodic protection (CP). Monitoring the effectiveness of the corrosion control system is critical to the safe operation of natural gas pipelines. This two-volume report presents the results of the PRCI research performed on PR-186-9610. This was a one-year project that summarized research on monitoring of cathodic protection systems for buried pipelines. Volume 1 of this report incorporates the research findings related to the application of individual monitoring techniques and provides guidelines on how these techniques should be used to monitor specific pipeline scenarios for external corrosion. Therefore, this report is necessarily limited to those areas for which research has been performed. The output of this report will support and enhance companies` existing procedures and practices. Each individual company will have to decide how to incorporate this review into their particular monitoring practices. Volume 2 presents the appendices for Volume 1. Volume 2 includes (1) the maps that provide a visual representation of each scenario with respect to an overall pipeline plan, (2) detail discussions of each monitoring technique, and (3) the bibliography of research papers referenced in this study.
