HIPPI - gigabit LANS are here today

Conference ·
OSTI ID:32560

The need for higher speed data transmission led to the development of the High-Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) ANSI standards supporting data rates of 800 Mbit/s and 1.6 Gbit/s. HIPPI-based equipment first appeared in 1988, and HIPPI is currently the interface of choice in the gigabit-per-second range. While HIPPI has limitations, it is expected to be heavily used until equipment based on the emerging ATM and Fibre Channel standards mature. This paper covers the development of the HIPPI standards, some HIPPI-based devices, and the advantages and shortcomings of HIPPI.
