The paper deals with the macroscopic petrographic characteristics and distribution of lithotypes in coals with different sizes and various densities. The results show that vitrain (vitrinite-rich coal) always concentrates on coarser and lighter parts of the coals, however, fusain, on finer and heavier parts. In addition, microscopic petrographic characteristics have been investigated by a MPV-III microscope. Combined with the screening and float-and-sink test, the distribution of macerals in coals with different sizes and densities have also been studied. It has been concluded that vitrinite is generally rich in coarser and lighter fraction of the coals, and, fusinite, in finer and heavier fraction. Moreover, the mechanism that gives rise to the diversified distribution of petrographic constituents in coals has been studied by means of measurement of density and HGI of various lithotypes, in combination with the test grinding. It has applications for the separation of petrographic constituents by means of selective grinding and gravitational preparation methods.
