SiO{sub 2} aerogel ultrafine powder and ZrO{sub 2}-SiO{sub 2} ultrafine complex oxide were prepared by sol-gel method. Co/ZrO{sub 2}-SiO{sub 2} and Co-Ru/ZrO{sub 2}-SiO{sub 2} catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness technique and physically mixing method. The effect of ruthenium addition on texture, structure, reduction, H{sub 2} desorption and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction properties of nano-sized cobalt based catalysts is investigated. The results indicate that addition of ruthenium makes the reduction of Co{sup 2+} difficult. The activity of the catalyst drops a little. The selectivity of CH{sub 4} decreases and selectivity of C{sub 5+} increases. Distribution of hydrocarbon products deviates from Schulz-Flory distribution; there are two peaks at C{sub 9} and C{sub 15} respectively.
