Entrained-flow gasification of coal and biomass
- Netherlands Energy Research Foundation, Petten (Netherlands)
This paper discusses the approach and preliminary results of ongoing research at ECN on co-gasification of biomass and coal in entrained-flow based IGCC systems for power production. In the work, desk studies are performed to assess the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of process options. In the Netherlands, more than 15,000 kt/yr of biomass waste material is available for power production. Co-gasification process options have been identified with a low, as well as, a high degree of integration of the biomass and coal gasification parts. An extensive experimental program is carried out to address identified potential technical problem areas, such as carbon burn-out (gasifier efficiency), slagging and fouling (mineral matter transformation) and ash utilization. Lab-scale, both atmospheric and pressurized entrained-flow reactors are used in careful experimental simulations of the gasification process. In the paper, the reactor facilities and experimental and analytical methods are described.
