To determine how CaCO{sub 3} acts as a desulfurizing agent, the steam gasification of coal mixed with limestone has been investigated in a fluidized-bed reactor. Sulphur content in the coal used is 3.02wt%. Coal with particle size of 0.21mm and limestone with 0.125 mm are mixed. A series of limestone/coal mixtures is prepared, in which Ca/S molar ratio is 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 respectively. In the fluidized-bed reactor, the mixtures are heated to 1,373K in H{sub 2}O+N{sub 2} atmosphere and held at that temperature for 30 min. The gas produced is collected from 573K to 1,373K. The sulfur contents in gas samples and in residual solid are analyzed respectively. The experimental data show that CaCO{sub 3} (not CaO) reacts with H{sub 2}S from product gas in gasification of coal with limestone. The reaction is strongly limited by both H{sub 2}S pore diffusion in limestone and pore mouth plugging effect of CaS produced. The experimental results show that CaS decomposability would increase with an increase of steam content in the fluidized-bed reactor when the gasification temperature of coal is above 1,123K.
