Low cost FGD systems for emerging markets
- ABB Flakt Industri AB (Sweden)
- ABB Environmental (Norway)
- ABB Environmental Systems (United States)
Air pollution control technologies such as wet and dry FGD systems are mature technologies with proven experience. However, market forces have repeatedly demanded lower cost solutions and in response, ABB has developed new low cost FGD technologies. A new dry FGD system was recently introduced in Poland at the 200 MW level. The new technology called New Integrated Desulfurization, NID, is a lime based system which operates without a drying reactor or atomization equipment. However, the performance is equal or better to conventional dry Filter technology. A system based on ESP technology will be available shortly. ABB`s sea water FGD technology has been successfully commercialized in Europe and the Far East. Recently, ABB was awarded the Shenzen 300 MW system in China. A 320 MW system on the Grand Canaria was successfully put into operation in 1996. The sea water technology makes use of the alkalinity of sea water to remove the flue gas SO{sub 2}. Before returned to the sea, the sea water is neutralized in aeration basins. As the ABB sea water system makes use of no reagent, it is a very cost effective system for coastal based applications. ABB`s new limestone based wet FGD technology, LS-2, has been in operation in the US for more than a year. Significant cost reductions have been achieved through dramatic reduction in the absorber size and tight integration of subsystems. Cost reductions were achieved while improving the performance of the system. The LS-2 system is capable of producing wallboard grade gypsum from low grade limestone. The ABB FGD technologies are presented in detail together with operating experience from full-scale installations.
