The high inherent moisture in lignite is responsible for its low heating value and difficulties in its processing and utilization. The Clean Coal Technology Institute of the Heilongjiang Mining Institute has been investigating lignite beneficiation by hot-water drying (HWD). HWD tests have been performed on lignites from the Dayan Mineral Bureau and Yiminhe Coal and Power Company in Inner Mongolia, and the Shulan Mineral Bureau in Jilin Province. Although lignite specific differences were noted following HWD, all lignites showed significant decreases in the equilibrium moisture level and corresponding increases in heating value. HWD increased the hydrophobicity of the lignite surface to such an extent that the hot-water dried lignites could be concentrated by froth flotation with good separations. After HWD these lignites could also be formulated into coal-water fuels with commercially viable solids concentrations. The high volatile matter content and non-agglomerating tendency of lignite is preserved in these LWFs giving excellent combustion characteristics. Burning as LWF also reduces flame temperatures leading to lower NOx emissions.
