Forty-five elements in 22 Permo-Carboniferous coals from Shanxi Province were investigated using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICPAES). The geometric means and arithmetic means and range of concentrations for each of 45 elements are given. The geometric means of concentrations of these elements in Shanxi Permo-Carboniferous coals are lower than those of 137 representative coals from the main coal fields in China. Also, the average concentrations of these elements in Taiyuan formation coals were compared with those in Shanxi formation coals. Finally, the dominant factors controlling enrichment of minor and trace elements in Shanxi Permo-Carboniferous coals were analyzed. Sedimentary environment and intrusion of magma during Yanshan Orogenesis are two main controlling factors.
