Integrated software systems for power plant management in a regulated and deregulated market
- SCT Utility Systems, Inc., Columbia, SC (United States)
The deregulation of the electric power industry is moving at a rapid pace. Deregulation actually means disaggregation of the vertically integrated utility in which only the generation part will be deregulated. The transmission and distribution will continue to be regulated monopolies operating as independent companies. The movement to market based rates for electricity will require more control and scrutiny of business practices and the addition of systems to manage the new businesses. Some generating companies will, for the first time, have to weight reliability against production costs. Generating, transmission and distribution companies will now have to separately manage power sales transactions and deal with their class of customers. This paper discusses the different business practices in the divided utility business and focus on integrated software systems that will support them.
