The frequency decomposition multigrid method was previously considered and rejected because it was not robust for problems with discontinuous coefficients. In this paper it is shown how to modify the method to obtain such robustness while retaining robustness for problems with anisotropic coefficients. Applications of the method to a problem arising in global ocean modeling is also discussed. Finally, the performance of this method on the CM-200 is evaluated.
