Equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair facilities may be small contributors to environmental pollution, but they are not immune to state and federal discharge requirements and enforcement actions. The shift in the last two decades from managing water quality to managing effluent quality at the source has had profound effects on smaller facilities that discharge contaminants. Owners and operators of such facilities should develop and implement ``environmental guidelines`` or ``best management practices`` for employees to follow daily. If a program is later implemented, this preliminary step should reduce the risk of contaminants entering the environment and potentially lower the company`s exposure to fines, criminal liability, cleanup requirements, lawsuits, negative publicity, land resale problems and possible shutdowns. Regional and local environmental regulatory agencies can provide information on state and local requirements pertaining to specific businesses. The authors present guidelines for storing hazardous waste onsite.
