A national set of guidelines for grid-interconnection of small-scale renewable energy sources is currently being developed by electric utilities, photovoltaic, and inverter design experts. This paper presents a summary of the proposed guidelines and the technical policy for conditions of interconnection in Queensland. Under existing conditions, it is technically feasible to introduce small-scale roof-top PV systems with or without battery storage. The guidelines set out a number of compliance testing for the approval of the inverter system. Given the developments made in the design of inverters and to reduce some barriers against interconnection a number of requirements can be amended without compromise to the integrity of the system. The metering and revenue structure must be reviewed to allow an acceptable pay back period to potential investors.
