The authors investigate the application of bilinear discontinuous (BLD) and quadratic discontinuous (QD) finite element discretizations in space and energy to ion transport in amorphous media. It was shown earlier that high-order accurate but continuous schemes like linear nodal tend to be unstable with strong negativities when the solution is sharply varying. This is particularly true in charged-particle transport where the physics is dominated by continuous slowing down (CSD). The exponential discontinuous scheme gives strictly positive solutions (for positive sources) but with unacceptably large numerical straggling, while the linear discontinuous scheme shows reduced but noticeable struggling, although with strongly damped negativities. These conclusions have been confirmed for ion transport in the presence of scattering by adapting the ONEBFP code to read ion cross sections from the YATC library. Here the authors present results comparing BLD and QD discretizations with the original linear nodal scheme in ONEBFP.
