These proceedings represent papers presented at the 10th American Physical Society Topical Conference on Shock Compression of Condensed Matter, held in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA, in July{backslash}August, 1997. The purpose of this Conference was to provide a forum where scientists and engineers studying the response of condensed matter to dynamic high pressures and temperatures could exchange ideas and technical information. At the Conference, papers on mechanical, chemical, electro{minus}magnetic and optical responses of condensed phase materials to shock stimuli were presented. Specific topics included equations of state, synthesis, phase transitions, hypervelocity phenomenology, impact and penetration mechanics, strain and failure behavior, and the safety aspects of explosives. Developments in measurement techniques including the fast optical methods were also discussed. Altogether, there were 236 papers presented and included in these proceedings; out of these 62 have been abstracted for the Energy,Science and Technology database.(AIP)
