The paper describes the state-of-the-art of pipeline automation for the gas transmission industry. The project results are based on the industry survey, contacts and data gathered within the industry as well as a review of automation technologies in use of under development, and information from other industries with similar functional requirements. The report will assist the industry in defining the strategy for pipeline automation activities. A common theme was centered on the need to obtain pipeline operating data in real time. It is believed that the explosive growth in information technology should help the industry in the area of pipeline automation.
