ESRF experience relevant to the production of short intense electron bunches in storage rings
- European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, BP 220, 38043 Grenoble (France)
When operating the storage ring in the single-bunch mode, at the standard settings (6 GeV, zero-current rms bunch length of 15.4 ps), already with relatively low current (0.3 mA per bunch) we systematically experience turbulent lengthening and widening. Theoretical and numerical developments have allowed us to simulate the instability mechanism and guess at an impedance model, agreeing with the experimental results as measured with a streak camera for the bunch length and undulator light for the energy spread. For the last couple of years at the ESRF, we have been making full use of the flexibility of the storage ring lattice. One version of settings allows for the tuning of the lattice as close as possible to the zero value of {eta}. We have already stored beam in the quasi isochronous regime, the best achieved performances are given. Running at 1 GeV allows a factor of 17 to be gained on the bunch length, down to the 1 ps range. An experiment at 1 GeV was performed. Preliminary results are also presented. In both cases, the objective was to probe, with significantly shorter bunches, the impedance of the ring at very high frequencies. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
