Methods and limitations on producing very short bunches in linear accelerators have been studied. The use of magnetic compressors as well as the direct application of RF guns are discussed. The coherent synchrotron radiation might be the most import limitation factor. (AIP) {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics. }
