As most companies move to improve the effectiveness of their information systems, one of the most important goals is to ensure that corporate data is easy to access, monitor, and share. In trying to achieve this goal, petroleum companies face the challenge of managing data stored across numerous, disparate databases and accessed by independent applications. Pembina is pursuing an integration strategy to achieve greater efficiency in their management of corporate data. One project involves the retrieval of well and production information from the data source and the update of corporate reserves and land applications. Merak Projects, an engineering software vendor, and Digitech Information Services, a data vendor, are working with Pembina to automate this process. Merak`s Helios program integrates diverse information systems and databases across multi-platform configurations, thereby improving data consistency and accessibility. This is Pembina`s first step towards an automated, corporate wide information system which will span a variety of applications residing on UNIX and PC systems on Novell networks. Access to the most recent and reliable data will improve the quality of decisions and assist Pembina in maintaining a competitive advantage.
