New refractory lining systems have been developed to resolve the in-service problems encountered in early CFB enclosures. Since the early CFB era, several new refractory materials have been introduced with creative aggregate and cement alternations that improve their physical and chemical properties--especially strength, erosion resistance, and porosity. These materials have been installed in shop-assembled, vibration-cast, low cement castable modules resulting in several construction advantages and an improvement in the refractory service life. This paper describes the evolution to today`s innovative refractory materials, their design application, and rapid placement methods in a PFBC unit. Refractory systems were installed in a PFBC combustor, carbonizer, heat exchanger, cyclone, J-valve, and hot gas transfer piping. Current service experience with second generation PFBC refractory enclosures is discussed.
