This work is the result of a research project conducted at the University of Texas at Austin under the sponsorship of the Offshore Technology Research Center (OTRC). Analyses of a spar platform have been conducted in the time domain complementing other research using both frequency and time domain solutions being carried out at the OTRC.During the course of this research, various modifications to Morison`s equation have been investigated. These include frequency dependent C{sub M} coefficients and mean drift forces based on diffraction theory. To account for slowly varying drift forces, Morison`s equation is evaluated in the displaced position. Other possible sources of nonlinearities have been investigated including second order temporal and convective accelerations and Rainey`s axial divergence terms. Also free surface calculations including Wheeler`s approximation and uniform extrapolation have been considered. In this paper, results based on the computation of the forces in the displaced position with the C{sub M} coefficients and mean drift forces from diffraction theory are compared with experimental results for irregular waves.
