The National Advanced Drilling and Excavation Technologies (NADET) Program is intended to facilitate research, development, and demonstration of advanced technologies for those industries engaged in or dependent on drilling and excavation practices. The NADET Institute, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the agency that will administer the program. With substantial and continuing guidance from participating industries, the Institute will plan, monitor, and coordinate programs ranging from research to commercial demonstration of advanced systems. At present, the NADET Institute has received initial funding from the Geothermal Division of the US Department of Energy, and initial research projects will be relevant to the geothermal industry. However, such work can affect many other drilling tasks as well, ranging from oil and gas drilling to mining and construction. As the NADET program grows to receive broad support from a variety of industries, new work relevant to those industries will in turn contribute to advances in geothermal drilling technology. Properly coordinated, such cooperative efforts will prove to be much greater than the sum of their parts.
