Dispersion of dense plumes or clouds depends upon the external wind speed and turbulence, the initial density, the initial conditions of release and the boundary conditions. Generally, due to the negatively buoyancy, they cover a large surface area with a limited vertical depth. Furthermore, most accidental releases take place in the presence of obstacles such as the source container or the industrial site which strongly influence the dispersion. The purpose of the work described herein was to study experimentally, in a first part, the effects on the dispersion of a solid obstacle greater than the dense gas plumes heights. Continuous passive and dense plumes were released from a circular source flushed with the floor and the solid fence straighted normal to the mean flow. The experimental technique combines visualization and digital image analysis and determines the spatial distribution of instantaneous concentration in two-dimensional cross-sections of the plumes. The authors report mean and R.M.S. concentration measurements for both continuous passive and dense gas releases over a 2D solid fence. In a second part, they present a lagrangian stochastic model to describe dispersion for passive or dense gas over a two-dimensional obstacle in non homogeneous flow. Preliminary results presented hereafter are encouraging to develop these models.
