Cyclobutyne ligands. 6. Reactions of alkynes with the (cyclobutyne)triosmium complex Os{sub 3}(CO){sub 9}({mu}{sub 3}-C{sub 2}CH{sub 2}C(Me){sup t}Bu)({mu}{sub 3}-S) in the presence of UV irradiation

We have recently reported the preparation of sulfide cluster complex Os{sub 3}(CO){sub 9}({mu}{sub 3}-C{sub 2}CH{sub 2}C(Me){sup t}Bu)({mu}{sub 3}-S) (1). We have now investigated the reaction of 1 with diphenylacetylene and diethylacetylene in the presence of UV irradiation. In both cases, products containing ligands formed by the addition of an alkyne to the cyclobutyne ligand and a rupture of the C-C multiple bond of the cyclobutyne ligand were observed. In the presence of a large excess of diethylacetylene a product formed by the addition of two alkynes without an opening of the cyclobutyne ring was observed. The results of this study are reported here. 13 refs., 4 figs., 13 tabs.
