A series of selenium derivatives of permethyltantalocene, which include Cp*{sub 2}Ta({eta}{sup 2}-Se{sub 2})H, Cp*{sub 2}Ta-(Se)SeH, Cp*{sub 2}Ta(Se)H, and Cp*{sub 2}Ta(Se)I have been prepared. The selenido-iodide complex Cp*{sub 2}Ta(Se)I exhibits novel reactivity differences with MeMgI and MeLi, to give the selenido-methyl complex Cp*{sub 2}Ta(Se)CH{sub 3} and selenoformaldehyde-hydride complex Cp*{sub 2}Ta({eta}{sup 2}-SeCH{sub 2})H, respectively. 29 refs.
