Measurement of the {ital p{searrow}{ital p}{r_arrow}{ital d}{bold {pi}}{sup {bold +}}} Cross Section and Analyzing Power at Threshold

Differential cross sections and analyzing powers for the {ital p}{searrow}{ital p}{r_arrow}{ital d}{pi}{sup +} reaction have been measured to within {ital T}{sub {pi}}{sup cm}=85 keV of threshold. The {ital S}-wave strength is extracted and found to be {approximately}13{percent} larger than that determined from recent measurements of {ital np}{r_arrow}{ital d}{pi}{sup 0}. Both the analyzing power and the anisotropy in the angular distribution show the expected energy dependence and these data are used to obtain values for the two contributing {ital P}-wave amplitudes. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
