The vortex unbinding transition in thin superconducting films is discussed within the cycle approximation, taking into account a vortex core shape. It is shown that for large core energies the universal Kosterlitz-Thouless-like behavior takes place in the vicinity of the characteristic transition temperature {ital T}{sub KT}, while for low core energies the vortex-antivortex pair unbinding occurs through a first-order transition. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
