{ital B}{sub {ital c}} meson production in {gamma}{gamma} collisions and the charm content of the photon

Based on the photon structure function formalism we calculate the {ital B}{sub {ital c}}({ital B}{sub {ital c}}{sup {asterisk}}) meson production cross section in {gamma}{gamma} collisions via the partonic subprocess {ital c}{gamma}{r_arrow}{ital B}{sub {ital c}}({ital B}{sub {ital c}}{sup {asterisk}}){ital b}. It is shown that this approach gives the same results for {ital B}{sub {ital c}}({ital B}{sub {ital c}}{sup {asterisk}}) meson cross sections as the direct leading order QCD calculation of the subprocess {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{ital B}{sub {ital c}}({ital B}{sub {ital c}}{sup {asterisk}}){ital b{bar c}} at small energy. However, as opposed to the direct QCD calculation we have obtained an increase in the {ital B}{sub {ital c}}({ital B}{sub {ital c}}{sup {asterisk}}) meson cross section at large energies. We have found also an additional contribution to the {ital B}{sub {ital c}} meson production via the nonperturbative fluctuations {gamma}{leftrightarrow}{ital J}/{psi}. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
