We report on a new method to identify the electronic symmetry of continuum states involved in the predissociation of long-lived rotational levels of diatomic molecules. The angular distribution of atomic fragments resulting from photodissociation is used to elucidate the dissociation mechanism. We applied this method to the {ital e}{sup 1}{Pi}{sub {ital u}} ({ital v}=0, {ital J}=1,...,9) levels of N{sub 2}. These levels predissociate by two different mechanisms to N({sup 2}{ital P}{sup {ital o}})+N({sup 4}{ital S}{sup {ital o}}) and N({sup 2}{ital D}{sup {ital o}})+N({sup 4}{ital S}{sup {ital o}}) and each dissociation mechanism yields a different angular distribution. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
