We report on {sup 63}Cu NMR spectra, {ital T}{sub 1} and {ital T}{sub 2{ital G}} measurements in single crystals of underdoped, three-layered, HgBa{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 8+{delta}}, with {ital T}{sub {ital c}}{approx_equal}115 K. We show clear evidence for the opening of a spin gap below {ital T}{sup {asterisk}}{approx_equal}230 K, the highest temperature reported so far. Also, the characteristic energy of the spin fluctuations is found to be higher than in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 6+{ital x}}; both features are presumably related to the very high {ital T}{sub {ital c}} in this compound. Below {ital T}{sup {asterisk}}, {sup 63}{ital T}{sub 1} has the same temperature dependence in the three CuO{sub 2} planes, which is difficult to explain within a pure interlayer spin pairing. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
