Under the modulation of the ion-beam velocity with a frequency close to the fundamental characteristic natural frequency of the system, the intermittent chaotic structure is observed in a well controlled manner in the ion-beam{endash}plasma system. In the chaotic regime, the Lyapunov exponent is positive, and both the correlation dimension and the Lyapunov dimension are greater than 2. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
