Here the authors discuss correlations between transverse ion heating observed in the auroral oval, and simultaneous wave activity observed with additional detectors on the Freja satellite. The ion heating is often seen in association with waves near the lower hybrid frequency. Wave frequencies have been observed extending well below the proton gyrofrequency. They have not observed regions of plasma density depletion in conjunction with the regions where ion heating is observed. They present a model to attempt to correlate these observations.
