Low-temperature specific heat and magnetic susceptibility are reported for UPd{sub 5{minus}{ital x}}Au{sub {ital x}} alloys, for 2.5{lt}{ital x}{lt}3.2 and {ital x}=1. These low-temperature properties reflect a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between U moments. UPd{sub 2}Au{sub 3} orders antiferromagnetically at 3 K. Between 5 and at least 14 K, its {ital C}/{ital T} is proportional to {ital T}{sup 2} with a large value of the {ital C}/{ital T} intercept {gamma}{sub {ital H}} of about 670 mJ/K{sup 2} and a slope 3 mJ/K{sup 4}mol. Below {ital T}{sub {ital N}}, its specific heat has a magnon-derived {ital T}{sup 3} term and a linear term ({gamma}{sub {ital LT}}), {gamma}{sub {ital L}}=500 mJ/K{sup 2}mol. Both values of {gamma}{sub {ital L}} and {gamma}{sub {ital H}} place this alloy into a heavy-fermion category. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
