Here the authors discuss wave measurements made by the Freja satellite of small scale structures in the auroral regions with enhanced Alfven wave activity, and in some cases broadband electrostatic turbulence. They argue that this turbulence is characteristics of ion acoustic wave activity. The joint existence of these two waves can rapidly damp the Alfven wave energy, providing significant energy deposition, which may relate to energization mechanisms for the auroral phenomena.
