Skin currents and plasma sheath currents induced at the Faraday screen bars during ICH cause long wavelength scattering and short wavelength mode conversion during ion cyclotron heating of tokamaks. Scattering of the incoming fast magnetosonic mode in the poloidal direction is found small and practically independent of the plasma presence. Excitation of short wavelength modes due to the oscillating sheath dipoles is substantial when the wavenumber matches the Bragg diffraction condition from the screen periodicity. At low edge densities {ital n}{sub {ital e}}{le}10{sup 12} cm{sup {minus}3} the power losses from scattering in the Bernstein mode are found comparable to dissipation losses from ion acceleration inside the sheaths. Subsequent Landau damping of the short wavelengths contributes to the edge plasma heating. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
