Missing isoscalar monopole strength in {sup 58}Ni
- Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843 (United States)
The giant resonance region in {sup 58}Ni was studied with inelastic scattering of 240 MeV {alpha} particles at small angles including 0{degree}. It is shown that the total isoscalar monopole strength in the region {ital E}{sub {ital x}}=12 to 25 MeV is {lt}50{percent} of the {ital E}0 energy-weighted sum rule, and that the centroid of the {ital E}0 strength {ital E}{sub GMR}{approx_gt}24.8 MeV in contrast to the {ital E}{sub GMR}{approx_equal}17 MeV expected from systematics of other nuclei. If there is similar unobserved {ital E}0 strength in other nuclei, {ital E}{sub GMR} for those nuclei may be significantly different from those used to extract nuclear matter incompressibility. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
